Rainforest Treasures

Although the South American Rainforest comprises 1.2 billion acres, it is still only 1% of the earth’s surface. Yet it is considered the lungs of our planet since it recycles at least 20% of the carbon dioxide into oxygen. Most importantly, it is home to more than half of the 10 million species of plants, animals, and insects, which is why it is also called “Nature’s Medicine Chest.”
Of the few plants that have been studied, at least 37% of all medicines prescribed in the U.S. have active ingredients derived from rainforest plants and 70% of the 3,000+ plants found to be active against cancer cells are found in the rainforest. Still, less than 1% of the plants from the Amazon rainforest have been scientifically researched for their potential benefits to our health.

However, these medicinal and energizing properties have not gone unnoticed to the indigenous Indians, who, for centuries, have used these natural ingredients to energize, heal, prolong life, and improve their overall sense of well-being. By listening to the traditional healers, our research leads us to the study of three potentially beneficial plants: açai, capuaçu, and yerba maté.

Perhaps this is why Oprah had a guest physician on her show who listed açai as one of the top ten foods to help you look better and age less.

Five reasons to include the Açai fruit or juice in your diet:

This fruit is five times higher in antioxidant concentrations than Ginkgo biloba, with one group in particular: anthocyanins. (These are found in purple pigmented fruits.) This phytonutrient have successfully been used to treat a wide range of conditions including high cholesterol, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma, and varicose veins. This antioxidant does a better job of protecting artery walls than vitamin C and E. However, the combination of vitamin C, vitamin E, and anthocyanins found in the açai fruit makes it one of the highest antioxidant-producing fruits and may be very helpful as a cancer preventing agent. Additionally, it contains both omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids which helps to reduce cholesterol and provide a great energy source.

Five reasons to include Capuaça

Five reasons to include Yerba Maté

Since this fruit is from the chocolate family, many of the remarkable health benefits that have been attributed to chocolate are equally true of capuaça. In particular, it contains a specific antioxidant phytonutrient called polyphenols, which are common in medicinal plants such as green tea and grape seeds. However, when capuaça was studied, the polyphenol (now named theograndins after the Latin name for capuaça) had not been seen before. Research into its benefits are showing cardiovascular protection, immune support, and in particular to cancer lines, theograndins were uniquely effective at killing colon cancer cells.

This tea contains mateine, a cousin to caffeine, with subtly different properties. Unlike caffeine, mateine is believed to relax peripheral blood vessels which would actually reduce blood pressure, would not increase sleeplessness or nervousness associated with caffeine consumption. Scientific studies in Switzerland have shown that maté is one of the most effective weight loss aids as it increases the rate at which a healthy person burns fat and made a person feel full longer, thus reducing the desire to consume additional food. As a powerful antioxidant, it provides non-jangly energy, increased fat burning and weight loss.

Conscious Selection:

Unfortunately, the rainforest is disappearing at an alarming rate of 1.5 acres per second. At this rate, the rainforest could be eliminated within the next 40 years. As you search for these products, please select a company which respects the people, plants, and environment of the rainforest. Socially and ecologically sensitve farming will profit everyone, especially the earth. The longer we can protect the rainforest, the longer the rainforest will be around to protect us.
